White Star: White Box Science Fiction Roleplaying [Swords & Wizardry]
Publisher: Barrel Rider Games
by David D. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 04/17/2018 00:38:50

An excellent OSR take on space opera.

7 Classes to choose from including 'Robot' and 2 kinds of Alien the 'Alien Brute' and 'Alien Mystic'

Very smooth, but combat focused, OSR gameplay. Check out the 'White Star Companion' for an easy way to make the mechanics less combat focused.

Excellent starship combat system and a large galley of example ships.

Psychic powers included in 2 flavours. Alien Gifts and 'Meditations of the Way' for 'Star Knights'

A very strong 'How to GM Space Opera' section with several example campaign modes

A large bestiary of aliens and adversaries.

An example star sector and intro adventure.

Black and white art throughout. The PDF is bookmarked.

Stars Without Number: Original Core Edition
Publisher: Sine Nomine Publishing
by David D. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 04/17/2018 00:33:28

Stars Without Number is a great accomplishment. Not just for an OSR, but for any RPG.

3 classes (Warrior, Psychic, Expert) supplemented by training and background packages (1 of each) to produce varied characters.

A strong selection of scifi gear and ships. With solid subsystems for customizing your own starship.

The mechanics are a bit clunky by modern standards but smooth by OSR standards. Very playable.

The setting is intriguing but minimal. A galaxy emerging from a dark age. A second chance to create a human Imperium among the stars.

Sector, Planet, Faction, Adventure, and Alien creation subsystems. A wonderful toolbox to build almost anything a GM might need.

A small bestiary and example sector.

A really excellent 'How to GM' section focusing on Sandbox Style play.

Black and white art throughout, very high quality. The PDF is bookmarked.

Bulldogs! (d20 Edition)
Publisher: Galileo Games
by David D. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 04/17/2018 00:21:18

40 pages of setting. 160 pages of d20 rules. A by-the-book d20 product

A very small basic setting.

A large cast of playable species mainly drawn from tolkien (space elves! space dwarves! space orcs! space drow!) or beastmen. A few of the species were suitably 'alien' for a more serious scifi game.

A collection of action oriented classes in classic d20 fashion. Don't look for scientists or diplomats here. Just lots of fighters and rogues. Each with their own wacky class features and speciifc combat niche to fill.

Basic equipment and starship rules

A few ideas on how to run pulp space adventures

The PDF is NOT bookmarked. Mostly black and white, but a few colour pieces. Excellent art quality throughout.

Excellent site based campaign with several locales presented in good detail. Just shy of being spectacular. If just a small amount more were included to expand the scope it would be an easy 5/5

Don't let the map fool you these kingdoms are inspired by sub-Saharan Africa. Steaming jungles, sunbaked Savanna, Lost Cities, and more!

Excellent, but brief, sourcebook for running African campaigns or incorporating that flavour into your larger RPG.

Black and white art of inconsitent quality. Some excellent art and some atrocious. The PDF is bookmarked.

Barbarians of Lemuria (Legendary Edition)
Publisher: Beyond Belief Games
by David D. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 02/09/2018 12:32:07

Innovative, Rules-Light Sword and Sorcery Gaming.

An innovative class-based system which does away with skill entirely. I usually disdain class-based systems for skill-based ones. But this one works. It treats each of the dozens of classes as its own skill. Makes it very easy to build a character and know exactly what he can do.

A very strong freeform magic system featuring 3 types of magic. Alchemy is used to make items and potions. Miracles are used to manipulate luck (narrative mechanics are no longer 'meta machenics'!) and a more standard sorcery system for 'generic mages'. All 3 feel very different and all 3 work very well.

A small gazeteer of the setting.

A small bestiary.

3 Sample adventures.

Black and white art throughout. The PDF is bookmarked.

Heroes Of Hellas
Publisher: Power Glyph Studio
by David D. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 02/09/2018 12:23:58

Sword and Sorcery adventures in Ancient Greece. The golden age of Atlantis is over, the petty Olympans have overthrown the benign Titans and now humanity suffers a dark age of war and monsters. One of the most complete and evocative RPGs I've seen in any genre.

Options for playing characters from a dozen greek city states as well as barbarians, centaurs, satyrs, and minotaurs.

An extensive gazeteer of the greek world as if the myths had all been real.

An intriguing mechanic for making sacrifices to the gods and enduring labours on their behalf. Makes 'narrative mechanics' part of the setting via the 'Favour of the Gods'

Rules for mass combat, battles, sea voyages, and sea battles.

An extensive bestiary of dozens of ancient greek monsters.

3 short introductory adventures.

Excellent black and white art throughout. The PDF is bookmarked.

Sell-Swords of Mars

The exact 'Martian Campaign' I've been hoping to write and run for years. Someone else beat me to it!

Edgar Rice Burroughs' Mars is invaded by HG Wells' Martians!

Tripods vs Sky Galleons! Red Men vs Grey Men!

A great romp through several intrigues, battles, and dungeons

One of the best 'Adventure Paths' I've seen published for any system.

Really great fun, a wonderful and complete product I cannot recommend enough either to fans of Sword and Planet or rookies looking to learn what it's all about.

Includes character options for Red Men, Green Men, White Apes, Synthoids, and Grey Men in enough detail to play multiple character types from each race.

Equipment and vehicles for Mars including Sky Galleons and Martian Tripods.

Includes a Gazeteer of Mars including 4 Red-Martian City-States as well as the homes of the other races and several wilderness area. Their version of the 'Martian Underdark' is especially interesting

A small Bestiary, Introductory Adventure and Random Adventure Generator are included as well as an essay on 'How to GM Sword and Planet Stories'

Sundered Skies - Setting Book
Publisher: Triple Ace Games
by David D. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 12/07/2017 13:00:11

Magitech High Fantasy

The setting is well outlined but rarely gets beyond 'broad strokes'. Many original and evocative ideas are to be found, few are developed very far.

Races include fully sapient baby-dragons (Drakin), plant-based Elves, steampunk Dwarfs, sky-viking Orcs, mutant Goblins (Glowborn), and anthrophomorphic animals enslaved by the Elves (Wildlings)

The setting itself is a shattered world of sky sialnds floating between an icy glacier and a raging inferno. Sky ships navigate this oddly glowing world in search of salvage, and commerce. Sadly many of the physical laws of the world are based on game balance rather than cinematic appeal or intuition (sky ships cannot approach sky islands from the top or bottom, only from the edges for example)

The religion is fairly detailed and involved avatars still walking amongst mortals in the world. But it reads like a bad soap opera or over the top anime. The gods come across more as reckless and childish superhumans than divine personifications.

Half of the book is dedicated to a plot point campaign. This is the story the setting was designed to tell. Sadly it is both a hard railroad and poorly written. Few options are presented besides 'run screaming into combat' and there's not enough detail to support any other play style. The plot itself makes little sense, follows no logical train, build no momentum. It's just a long series of combat encounters with the vaguest excuse as to why a fight is needed. Indeed sometimes I have no idea why the author believes a scenario would ever lead to combat. He just types 'when the fight begins...' leaving me asking 'what fight? why?'

There is not much art in the book. What is there is full color but of variable quality. the PDF is bookmarked.

The setting itself likely deserves a 3/5. Good ideas, just not enough detail. Even the hokey 'religion' can't drag it down too far. The plot point campaign is 1/5. At times it makes no sense and cannot be followed even after several re-readings.

Fading Suns (Second Edition)
Publisher: Ulisses Spiele
by David D. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 12/07/2017 12:44:31

'A lighter, softer, Warhammer 40k'

Do not confuse this with science fiction! This is science fantasy! Swords, bows, knights, cavalry charges, magic, and just the occassional spaceship or alien seems to be the order of the day in Fading Suns.

The setting goes into lavish detail in some sections, but completely omits other areas which will likely be vital to play. Feels incomplete.

The core mechanic is fast and simple. lots of gear, both psychic and magical powers are included. No starship rules!

The art is black and white but of the highest quality for black and white art. The PDF is not bookmarked.

Hard to give it low marks in the areas they did include. But so many areas are omitted I can't give it any higher rating than a 3/5. If it were a more complete product 4/5 would be more likely.

Lightspeed
Publisher: Avalon Game Company
by David D. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 12/07/2017 12:38:08

Fast and simple point-based ruleset. Lots of gear. Psychic powers. Starship rules. All the basics are covered.

The book includes a 'broad strokes' kitchen sink campaign setting including pastiches of the Empire (Star Wars), the Federation (Star Trek), and a more 'corporate' empire which has a more grey morality. Each region is touched on in brief and campaign ideas are provided for each (rebels vs the Empire, space rangers, free traders, space explorers, etc.). Also many species of humanoid aliens are mentioned in brief, some fairly original but most being pastiches of familiar races from pop-culture (predators, xenomorphs, klingons, hutts, etc.)

The Bestiary and Starship Gallery are extensive. The Art is black and white, but very strong, about as good as black and white art can be, with many illustrations of ships and characters. The PDF is not bookmarked.

Starquest: Celendrian system—campaign setting
Publisher: New Dimension Games
by David D. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 12/07/2017 12:31:05

The author has decided to take the opportunity of this publishing to show off his prose writing ability. Unfortunately his writing ability is subpar, unfocused and distracting from any merits of the product. It never gets to speak for itself as a setting. It's always revealed through the lens of the author's bad writing and rambling musings.
