Expert Feats

For $1, what can you expect? In this case, 5 feats that make characters really, really good with skills. The feats are verbose; even at the same size, they could fit onto a single (pictureless) page with some editing. Still, there's nothing wrong with them per se, and they o accomplish what they set out to do.

The PDF recommends giving these feats only to NPCs, but in the spirit of fairness I plan to offer them (with whatever modifications I may make) to my players as well. Any character spending 6 feats (these 5 plus Skill Focus) would get a 56 by Taking 20 before ability modification. In addition, various special abilities to get even better are possible with the higher feats.

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Satisfied
The feats were diferent than most I've seen, which could be positive or negative. On the plus side they had interesting descriptions and role-playing prerequisites. On the down side, many of the feats felt similar. Further, many of the feats gave spell-like abilities (or their Ex counterparts), which make them hard to fit into certain settings. Other feats simply act more like prestige class abilities. Unearthly Determination, for example, turns you into a quasi-undead creature.

The editing wasn't great, with at least a dozen misspellings and some questionable rules balance.

The interior artwork was good, simple but complementing the product rather than overwhelming it and giving mental images of the relevant segments.

If you like feats that go beyond the scope of normal feats, acting like miniature prestige classes, you'll probably like this product more than I did. If you're looing for ideas more than feats you can plug directly into your game, this is a decent product. Otherwise, I can't recommend it in good faith.

LIKED: The artwork and the italic plane descriptions.

DISLIKED: The mechnics of the feats, the editing, the lack of text density (not too many feats for its length).

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Disappointed
Quirin Mythology #2: A Handful of Artifacts
Publisher: GMC
by Charles G. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 04/19/2006 00:00:00

If you've seen any of the other Quirin Mythology series, or Quirin Adventures #3: Door to Simit Al, you know that GMC is building a niche for itself with 20-plus material. This immediately raises two questions: is A Handful of Artifacts one of these epic-level products? Will work for lower-level campaigns?

Of the six artifacts in the product, only one (the Paragon Crown) would be difficult to use in a mid-low level campaign. The others are well-suited for use as the centerpiece of nonepic campaigns?in fact, one of the campaign ideas (#2.1) is designed for perhaps 1st to 3rd level characters. Of course artifacts are powerful, and they're better-suited for higher levels.

For those interested in epic level play, the artifacts are designed with flexibility for high-level use in mind. These are not conventional magic items in any way, and no character would be likely to own these for long, but they could drive epic campaigns just as sub-epic campaigns. Additionally, they could be used as posessions of powerful NPCs and creatures, making them more interesting. These NPCs would act differently than the PCs might expect, since they will be driven by the need to satisfy the requirements or curses of the artifact they posess.

The ideas behind the artifacts are diverse. The Grail of Belief is a relic which could spark interreligious conflict or cause major changes to the faith structure of the world; the Paragon Crown and Schattentaeter serve from the shadows, giving their wielders special powers in exchange for certain acts. The Throne of Awust Raldig is almost like an incarnate spell, and the Observer and Cyl have beliefs and goals strong enough that they almost qualify as characters. (Cyl is statted like a monster, as a 'race' and a unique.)

Highlight: adventure ideas and research information tables for each artifact Recommended to: All DMs, without qualification: well fleshed-out story ideas along with solid mechanics are useful to everyone.

LIKED: The nine adventure ideas for each artifact are the most useful part of the PDF.

DISLIKED: "Schattentaeter" refers to the artifact, the template, and the creatures controlled by the template. It's not a big deal, but there's not much else to complain about.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
Quirin Mythology #1: A Handful of Epic Creatures
Publisher: GMC
by Charles G. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 10/07/2005 00:00:00

For those of you looking for a collection of high-CR monsters, there's not a whole lot out there. Quirin's Mythology #1 delivers a number of epic creatures, suitable for a variety of levels.

Overall the creatures are well-designed and interesting. The creature ideas are compelling, though the mechanics are unexceptional. (Needless to say, the skills aren't correct -- in fact, skill points are assigned almost at random.)

Alcorn is an interesting unique monster; Deshayvine are thumb-tall feyfolk warriors with a twisted background; Gomthu are corrupting demons; the Milmang is a unique creature with incredible power, sapping the strength of even gods when it hits; Threyclops are epic giants.

The text expands on these by adding variants (Deshayvine assassin, Threyclops fighter), custom magic items, and a new spell.

Highlight: creative backstories for all creatures Recommended to: everyone who runs epic campaigns, nonepic DMs looking for background material

LIKED: The creatures all have interesting backgrounds and the material is well fleshed-out.

DISLIKED: I didn't like the format of the product so much, or the mechanics of the creatures.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Satisfied
Alcorn's skills have been fixed. The others were correct.

This is a collection of 30 feats, intended to benefit high-level fighters by giving them additional choices -- always a good idea, in my opinion.

Some of the feats (Armor Focus) can be taken as early as first level, while one can't be taken until 16th level (Extraordinary Weapon Specialization). The balance is generally good; I don't forsee any major game-breaking potential (though, as with any collection of new rules, the added versatility does nudge power upward).

LIKED: There are some really interesting feats here, which made the product worthwhile for me. Extended Smite gives a character a real reason to continue with paladin levels, and "Terrible, Swift Sword" is just awe-inspiring.

DISLIKED: With only 30 feats, a DM who is particular about what he allows in his world may find that there's little left after his idiosyncrasies. In my case, as a true rules pedant, I can forsee myself using no more than 10-11 of these feats.

Of course, at $1.45, maybe that's still not bad.

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Very Satisfied
