Fantasy Ancestries

Many fantasy systems treat race as a "one and done," where you get some features at the start of the campaign and that’s it. As your character grows, other features overshadow your race, and eventually it hardly matters.

By using the Cypher System’s Flavor mechanic, Megan Tolentino lets the player decide how much they want to lean into their racial heritage. At every tier the player can give up a Type abilities to pick up a Flavor one, making it an interesting choice. It compares favorably with how some d20 games, like 13th Age, use layers of racial feats to allow players to dive deep into their race if they want.

All these heritage flavors are good, but I really want to make a Draconic or Fiendish Cypher System character right now!

Love it, and am using it in The Gray World (5E adventure).

Minor nit: I only wish artist's name is in the licensing file, so I didn't have to find it again on DriveThru.

Just what I was looking for. If only Elizabeth Porter had some d12s, d10s, d8s, d6s, and d4s, I would snap them up.

Unusable for my products. I should have given Kevin C's review more weight.

Kicking It: Successful Crowdfunding

I read this three times before launching my first Kickstarter. Highly useful. My project funded in 7 hours, partly because I had done my homework. And this book was a huge part of that homework.

Things do change fast, so I recommend checking out the very successful Kickstarters by Monte Cook Games and see what they've learned since they published this.

I love maps, and I love this collection.

The first thing I noticed was the Acrobat UI saying "This file includes fillable form fields." What? In a map?

You get 3 versions each of five big continental maps. A landform map, a hexmap, and a map with with those fillable form fields for places of interest. Name that city whatever you like. Put your campaign there right on the map.

The first map is Divided by Stone, and this continent is split up by giant mountain ranges. Start your campaign here, and then go over the mountain passes for higher level dangers there. Perfect for a FRP type game.

From Desert to Ice. Like a lot of stressful environments in your campaign? This is a great map.A nice overland trek across this map would be great. Less Shires, more Mordors. :)

Out of the Wastes. And you thought Desert to Ice had a lot of badlands? This is 90% badlands. I'm thinking Mad Max would fit right in.

Deep in the Jungle has (wait for it!) lots and lots of Jungle. And a bit of dry land too, maybe a savanna. Jungle kingdoms, lizard people, big nasty snakes. Maybe a giant ape?

Amidst the Ruins is the strangest map. Geometric shapes that can't be natural blend with organic looking lands. Giant scale constructs, hundreds of miles on a side. Numenera, or strange sci-fi ruins on another planet.

The last two maps don't look down, they look up. Constellation maps. No hex version, no fillable form version. Just constellations you could use in your campaign. Print them out and show your players. "The Eye," "The Gateway," and "The Unicorn" are all up in the sky. What's your sign?

Naval Perils
Publisher: Metal Weave Games
by John M. [Verified Purchaser]

If anything, I like this even better than Naval Encounters (which I like). And when you put the the two together, they are a great addition to any Numenera game. Like Naval Encounters, this book covers the skies as well as the seas.

The formatting in Naval Perils works for me. The pages are full pages and the double column format makes them easy to read. The art is great, and the look professional.

There are three main sections: Locations, Vessels, and Creatures.

Locations includes eight evocative and weird settings. From underwater reefs of death to botanical skystations, each setting has 1 - 3 plot hooks and evocative art.

Vessels lays out nine sea and/or air going vessels, all of which use the Naval Encounters rules, useful if you want ship to ship combat among other things. Each one lists crew, stats, cargo, and numenera enhancements. There is a lovely flying pirate ship that will see use at my table.

Creatures is a ten page bestiary of things that swim, fly, and get in your player characters' faces. I particularly like the Kyolos, a creature that jumps between the material world and the datasphere that changes weather patterns and leaves rifts of glimmers in its wake.

Recommended.

Of the three books, only the Adventure book has been OCR'd. The others are just scanned images, so you can't search them. :(
