RPG Handbook ~ Getting Started
Publisher: Dragonfly
by Andrew F. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/29/2018 23:06:20

This book is an incredible introduction to the Roleplaying Game hobby. I highly recommend this for new players and veterans alike. It is a little dated as it came out before 5th edition. It is still a masterful piece of writing.

I give this 5 stars. The artwork is great for those wanting to create a RPG space combat or even a solar system. In addition this is FANTASTIC for those of us that play space wargames. The Artist has included a starfield with both hexes and Squares. All you need to do is print as many copies as you need to make a space mat that looks great and you have plenty of planet and some asteroids and suns to add.

I cannot praise this product enough as it is a pay what you want. Great Value for Game masters and especially Space Gamers. Top quality artwork with fantastic multiple uses.

Round of Fire - Core Rules
Publisher: The Lazy Games
by Andrew F. [Verified Purchaser]

Round of fire

Revolutionary game design.

I have been looking for a game like this since I started playing Miniatures. I think Round of Fire is the first game to get right the ebb and flow of combat. It uses a completely, to my knowledge, new turn sequence. I hesitate to call it that because it is NOT a traditional turn sequence or non-traditional sequence of play it is a clock is the best way I can describe it.

The game uses a unique time mechanism called the wheel. This creates a continuous system of activation of units. Once the initial activation initiative is determined there are no more initiative rolls or even turns per se. The game operates in a continually moving clock. I will not get into details of exactly how this works. Suffice it to say, it is revolutionary.

The very basics and backstory/Fluff of the game allow you to play from post WWII to Sci-Fi. You are not limited to this though. One of the beauties of this book is it also supplies you with the stats and required numbers to allow you to play any period from Ancient history/Fantasy to Science Fiction.

I am hoping the release the supplements for specific periods as I am pretty lazy. Even with my laziness we played a game of Napoleonic Skirmish and adopted one of the scenarios included in the book quite easily.

The game has a limitation however. Not really a limitation though, more of a scale choice. Simply put it is a Warband/Skirmish game. It is designed for small scale skirmishes. We played with about 24 figures per side. I think for Napoleonics we could have stretched the number to 40 or so but that would be the limit I would think.

As others have mentioned there are some minor editing/spelling errors but the publisher is fixing those and is extremely responsive via the games Facebook page. Once they have finished the edits they will be releasing the edited PDF to all purchasers. The edits are so minor and do not detract from understanding the game so do not let this stop you from getting your copy now! My Strongest Recommend is GO BUY THIS!

If you play Skirmish/Warband style miniature games BUY THIS NOW!

That's too kind Andrew! I'm very interested in hearing more about your Napoleonic games, could you write to me or on the group on Facebook? www.facebook.com/groups/roundoffire/ I'm really looking forward to chat more about that. It might even be the beginning of a napoleonic expansion!

Five Men in Normandy. WW2 skirmish campaigns.
Publisher: Nordic Weasel Games

This is a great little Skirmish game. The Rules are clearly written as with all of Ivan's products. The thing I like most about this game is that you don't need a boatload of miniatures and a huge table to play on to have an amazing game. This is a terrific introduction to the hobby game for you to help a friend or child get started with.

Don't let the 67 page length scare you. All of the rules you need to get started playing are in the first 20 pages. The type is large and examples plentiful. The next section deals with characteristics of the various nations you can play. There are 7 USA, UK, German, Polish, USSR, Free French, Finland.

The last section of the rules deals with Campaigns. This is where the rules go from really good to FANTASTIC. You can play a solo campaign or a campaign against another player in a kind of what we call today warband style. Ivan has outdone himself here in making the campaign rules simple to understand and execute but worthwhile so that you keep coming back for more battles.

Many campaign Systems Stagnate and people drop the campaign after a couple of weeks or a month. Not so here. My Group has been playing a 5 men campaign for over a year now. We have used different theaters of course but we stick with the system as once side eventually wins.

Next to Fast and Dirty this is Mr. Sorensons Best Game ever.

Empires: Campaign Scenarios

My Review of the Empires rule system was less than stellar. However I believe in giving credit where credit is due. The Campaign system is well thought out and easy to use. It makes playing a continuous campaign easy and enjoyable. I heartily recommend this product for players wanting to run a campaign using ANY ruleset. It is a job well done. The fact that it is free amazes me even more. Pick this up you won't regret it and pick up the core Empires Rules as well. With some tweaking on your part they are a great design idea.

Excellent set of rules for the horse and musket period. The focus is more on generalship than mechanics. I found the ease of play and the complexity of strategy a perfect blend. I would recommend this to anyone from the novice to the the expert. It is a perfect set of rules to introduce someone to the period.

Spellbound Kingdoms

Excellent game! I was not expecting much more than a sourcebook. I was more than pleasantly surprised when I began to read Spellbound Kingdoms. It is indeed a great sourcebook but so much more. It is a completely innovative new roleplaying system. I think it is fair to say that their is no other system on the market quite like it.

The combat system alone is worth the price of the book. I strongly encourage anyone looking for a great new system to try out Spellbound Kingdoms. I will give a more detailed review soon. Suffice it to say I have been gaming for 35 years and have adopted this as my weekly game. My friends love it as well. Excellent work.
