Challenger RPG a Free Roleplaying Game

I rather enjoy this game, it can be as serious or as silly as the GM and players want. The combat system is quick and simple, and there are plenty of customizations thet can make very unique characters for hours of fun.

It is just too much of a mishmash of various clashing genres. Your fantasy characters are supposed to take aliens, gun toting and car driving attacks etc.without turning a hair. Just a charotic jumble, with nothing resembling a plot.

The first thing I usually do when I come across a new game is make a character to see how it goes. The authors were not kidding when they said it was FAST! I made the character while reading, and was still done within fifteen minutes. From there I began reading through more of the system, only to find that is not the only place the authors wanted this system to be brisk with. Combat and skill checks are elegant and straight forward, and removing many of the rolls from the GM side helps take the pressure off.

Add to all of this the absolute wealth of information you get out of a FREE product, like adventure and dungeon design, I will be keeping an eye on this line! I love what I have seen, and can't wait to see more:)

I was looking for a simple to use set of rules for role-playing and I think this is it. With the easy to use challenge system you can really set up an adventure quickly and change it up on the fly. The combat is the real gem here though. Most RPGs are going in a miniature heavy, pull out the battle-mat, direction. Combats take up most of the game time, with figures moving to take advantage of the rules. In Challenger combat, the focus is still on the role-playing.Im looking foward to making some adventures to put up on the website!

Not too bad of a system. It's kind of like old D&D but way simplified yet way complicated at the same time. I feel like the whole thing is more of a guide, template, or base to tailor to your own needs as opposed to a complete game. That being said, I used the system, with my own heavy adjustments, and had a great time. I felt like the classes, skills, and race/species were a little too broad/open-ended so I tightened them up to less than 10 races & classes each with an equal number of available powers, and I came up with specific skills for my players to choose from. The original version I read was very clunky, almost hard to get through, this revision is a lot better. In the old version, I had a hard time fully understanding the armor system, so I scrapped it and used my own, in which players had to roll a 1d6+x where x was some armor value on the equipment. The new, revised version made much more sense of it, and I'm still not sure how I feel about it, but it doesn't seem bad at all. Now, my gripe, and why I only gave it 3/5: My group & I had a great time with this system, but I wound up spending so much time on having to tailor the system so that I felt it was balanced & consistent that I didn't get in as much time as I would have wanted on fleshing out the adventure. It was a homebrew setting & adventure, and having to mod Challenger so much I almost felt like I was creating a homebrew system as well. Either way, the author obviously put a fair amount of time & effort into this, and for the price (free) it's definitely worth checking out. I liked it enough that I came back to check out the revision, and plan on using it again. A great tool for gamers looking for something loose, open-ended and fun. My thanks to the author.

Dear. Mr. Thomas P., Thanks so much for the kind words and the great review. I really appreciate your taking the time to read and test out my game! It's too bad you had to put so much time into modifying the rules, but it sounds like you ended up with a great game. The past few months I was thinking if I were to 'do things over' I would include less of everything: classes, races, skills, etc. I was really intrigued by your mention of cutting things down to 'ten classes, races, and powers' and picking your own list of skills for you players. Would you mind terribly much e-mailing me your list of modifications to the game? I'm always looking to improve, and if you're willing to share your ideas, I'd love to hear them! When I originally designed Challenger it was meant to let you play any character you wanted to. This resulted in a huge amount of classes/races/skills. In retrospect, it's hard to balance a game with so many options. It ends up feeling like point-buy rather than class based and I've always felt that point-buy systems were terribly unbalanced. It would be really cool to hear what classes/races/skills you decided were 'core' to the game. A very long time ago there were only 5 'base classes' to choose from being "Wizard, Healer, Warrior, Archer, and Skills Master". Everything after that was just an addition to the game which eventually was included in the book. Ha ha, I know of other people who scrapped the armor system too. That was one of the main reasons I revised the book (and the clutter). Weapon damage was also a major request. If you're willing to spend the time, I'd love to hear your thoughts on Challenger. My e-mail is challenger_rpg(at)hotmail.com. You can also find my contact information on my website. If you don't feel like using e-mail, I always read all comments on the website as well. I'm still waiting on all the artwork commissioned for Challenger so I'm sure I'll be changing a few things when that pans out. I can't promise I'll overhaul everything, but all the new changes you've been seeing are thanks to great people who offered advice on improving Challenger. Thanks so much for your time and support. I really appreciate it, --David L. Dostaler Author, Challenger RPG

My initial read through of this system made me think "custom AD&D". While it does offer some interesting new mechanics and revisions of core character classes, I found the layout of the document daunting and a bit wordy. About halfway through the essential mechanics my curiosity left me. There is an extensive list of character classes and powers that are uniquely specific and yet not too complex. These are well done. I think there is a lot of potential here for a solid game, but I'm the type of player who likes extremes. Give me WoTC-rules-lawyer-delight or total freedom. Challengers seems like a good middle ground, but I'm not partial to that style. Overall, I'd say this is a good read, but I think I'd need a more reader friendly version if I was going to try and use the system.

I can't fault a free product too much, but it mentions car chases, and vehicle rules are unclear here and in the core book.

I felt like the improvements in formatting warranted another rating and review, plus unlike myself, you all can get this fine endevour for free. The system is d20 vs target number; the GM rolls no dice; all weapons do 1 damage unless otherwise stated. This system has several ups: the sheer number of class and race combinations, rules encouraging players to create their own skills, and the rules lite nature of the whole thing. Here are some suggestions: explaination of how vehicles are statted; more creatures; more races and more classes.

Killer Bug-Eyed Alien Frogs from Outer Space, a free adventure

If you liked the tone of "Of Mice and Men and Wizards," you'll probably enjoy reading this, too. As as adventure, it's probably going to turn out to be more of a framework than something that will be played as written. (In that sense, it reminds me some of the old 1st ed. AD&D modules.)

Of Mice Men and Wizards a Free Roleplaying Game
by Philip C. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/15/2011 09:21:53

For a free game you get what you paid for. I think another 3 hours spent on layout would have really helped but maybe you could do that on your own.

Ok first the name on the cover does not match the name on the inside. We are told this is Rat Wars but no background is given. There is one page on character creation and then alot of pages on powers. This gives some headache to actually developing a character. Next there is nothing on outfitting a character till the third book. Being able to cast fireballs but not being able to buy a pair of pants is just not right.

Just a little work on your part and it could be a beer and pretzel game but there are alot more better ones out there.

Challenger RPG a Free Roleplaying Game
by Matt P. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/05/2011 22:50:52

For a couple of bucks as well as what was promised in the advertisement for it (36 Classes, 86 Races, 253+ Powers, 75 Base Skills), I knew this wasn't going to be 'interesting'. However, clocking in at 103 pages, this was worse than I was expecting.

The biggest complaint I have is with the formatting. The layouts don't account at all for natural flow, and many (most?) of the paragraphs are cut off at inappropriate times making reading anything here difficult. Seeing as there is no real layout to speak of, there is also no dedicated whitespace for your watermark to prove you actually paid for it, so occasionally you will get said watermark all over valuable text (pages 31 and 33 are a hideous example of this). There's also random white space (see page 5, for starters).

There's also ONE piece of artwork used OVER AND OVER for this book. This is the very definition of sadness. You couldn't make any arrangements with any artists who have nothing better to do, or maybe send someone a few bucks to get more than one commissioned drawing (or to have rights to use ones already made)? It may have been better to have none than to have one image used so many times - it really, really stands out.

Next, we look at the actual game. The explanation of the rules is rather unclear, no examples are really given and there seems to be little standardization with the different abilities (look at Wizard, then look at Healer) and the sub-classes feel rather unbalanced. The race selection borders on ridiculous (with some repeats - why?), with equally ridiculous abilities (skeletons NEVER DIE, did we need a "cat woman" versus "cat girl"?), some of which don't look finished (read Alien from Blue Sun).

The game designers need to do a much better job at formatting their book ASAP - tables are your friend, and side bars and better use of white space can save this (or at least give this a better chance to shine). Reviewing the powers (and noting the mechanical stuff in a different font or blocking it off to separate it, making it easier to read) would be very useful too. While using a single D20 to handle all of the rolls isn't necessarily bad, it's hard to see through all of the roughness in this document to even consider trying it out.

I'm sorry for the poor formatting and unclearness. This is my first pdf ebook and it got a little messy when I converted it from my lovingly crafted word doc. I also removed some of the artwork for formatting reasons. I sincerely apologize, and I thank you for taking the time to review my product. I intend to do my best to fix the formatting, clear up some of the rules, and include a table of contents. I'm kind of really inept at sidebars and tables, but I'll do my best. Thank you so much for taking the time to help me out. I really appreciate it a lot. Sincerely, David L. Dostaler, Author

I have fixed the formatting, removed the watermark, added dozens of interior illustrations. I have also added a clearer explanation of the rules with an example of play and example of character creation. The whole book has been revised to be clearer, more concise, and easier to understand. Additionally I have posted the whole thing for free in the sample so you can check it out and see for yourself. If anyone else has any further suggestions on improving this book I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks, David L. Dostaler and Co.
