x.p. 100 G.P. $9.95
Upon initial inspection, this will appear to be an ordinary pdf download containing verbal descriptions of various magical items. Anyone with an intelligence of 9 or higher will notice that the majority of these are redundant or uninteresting. However, d4+1 hours of sorting through the repetitive (dozens of magical-furnishing-that-if-you-sleep-on-them-give-you-the-be- nefits-of-a-full-night's-rest or cooking-utensils-that-provide-infinite-food), uninspired (endless "____s of _____" that just raise an ability score a point or two), cartoony (lots of little things that instantly grow into dragons--or bears or eagles or tigers), jokey ("toga of party readiness") and inane (thinly-disguised contemporary technological objects like copy machines or tanning oil) entries will allow the DM to find d4x10 items that are actually interesting and might be usable in a game ("shoes of many footprints", dancing powder). Whether this is worth 9.95 is left to the DM's discretion. ... [TEXT_READ_FULL_REVIEW]

What you get are 60 very well done maps, that comply with all the design principels of mapping developed by old-schoolers in the famous "megadungeon mapping" thread at DF. The product oozes old-schoolnes. I think it's the one of the best map resources for OD&D, or any kind of old-school gaming.
The maps are gridless and this is a plus, because the author draws them with less restrictions and creativity constraints. The style is refreshing from what we usually see.
The have an old CRPG feel I just love. I you like those aesthetics, you will find these maps amazing.
I recommed the DUNGEONS compilation and the "Temples" set. The city, kingdom and other sets are not so good.
Definetely worth the money!! ... [TEXT_READ_FULL_REVIEW]

I received the revised edition of the book. I read it in one afternoon, it takes about an hour to go through it if you read them with their answers and don’t stop to figure them out. I found no distracting typos or problems with classic poems.
I did think the book had some interesting cover art, obviously an edited photo, perhaps a riddle? (I usually print these things out and put them in three-ring-binder so cover art matters to me.)
I found the book had some well placed bookmarks. They are placed so users can either call up the riddles with the answers, or without the answers. (In case they are buying this book for themselves.) The bookmarks also allow users to call up riddles by numbers or by topics. So the DM can randomly generate a riddle or look one up for a special purpose. (I plan to do it both ways in my own games.)
Personally, I don’t believe players should be given hints. I can’t think of a single case in any literally work where the villain or hero offered hin ... [TEXT_READ_FULL_REVIEW]

I love a good riddle of the classic type. This book is chock full of riddles from classic sources, Tolkien re-treads, and originals. Collections such as this are not easy to find.
What keeps me from rating this higher is the lack of editing. There are numerous grammar errors (such as 'to' instead of 'too' - "My face is often to high to see"), wrong words ("I walk all day on are head"), and places where things just got messed up, such as this botched classic: "What walks on four legs, then two legs, then three on three legs?".
Overall, good content, but feels like a rush job which detracts from the overall enjoyment. Looking forward to a cleaned up second edition. ... [TEXT_READ_FULL_REVIEW]

If you want to get a good argument started, put a couple of hack and slash DMs in the same room with a couple of role-playing DMs and ask them what do they think of riddles in D&D. The Iron DM opinion is that riddles are great when put into the context of the adventure. Just as there is no single roll to win a combat, (which tests the combat tactics of a player), there should not be a single roll to win a mind test of the players (which tests the adventuring tactics of a player).
101 Riddles, published by Stainless Steel Dragon and written by Jon Volden is written for the Dungeon Master that relishes in sending his players through a challenging ringer. The PDF contains 101 riddles for words and phrases typically encountered in an adventure.
The 46 page book is well bookmarked, though the layout could have used some work to save white space. The riddles themselves are not too difficult, nor too easy. They are also quite unique. The book’s biggest problem is that it itself is too ... [TEXT_READ_FULL_REVIEW]

I love maps. A good map elicits such a strong reaction from my imagination that I often need nothing else to come up with an adventure idea. When I saw this products, I decided to take a look.
From the Introduction:
Volondor: "The City," is perhaps the world's largest city map set. Volondor is unlike any other city map due to the number, size, variety and details of its floor Plans. Over 100 "unique" building floor plans intelligently arranged to form a huge walled castle surrounded by a large city. This city was designed with defense, economy and entertainment in mind. (This City offers many interesting role-playing locations.)
Does Volondor contain a greater number of floor plans, of a greater range in size, with more detail and variety than any other product out there? Are they "unique" and intelligently arranged, as the Introduction claims? Does the design facilitate defense, economy and entertainment?
*sigh*
No.
The worst offenders are the regional maps. They are ... [TEXT_READ_FULL_REVIEW]

"Age of Volondor: The City" is published by Stainless Steel Dragon Games 2008. The PDF ebook may be printed out in high definition. File is well book-marked for easy reference and navigation. It looks great on my wide screen laptop computer. I was able to print-out the 9 section castle map and tape it together without any real trouble. (My players were very impressed by it when they saw it.)
This is the largest single "City" Map Set ever created by this publisher. As the publisher describes "Perhaps the largest City map set ever created by "any" publisher." (At least to this level of detail.) It is done in typical SSD style. It is easy to read and interpret various icons depicting enough details that a game master can easily narrate room and area descriptions on the fly. As with the other SSD map sets the use of detail is pretty amazing. I really can see the difference in the locks being used on the doors. I can spot the torches and windows on the walls. I don't know about other ga ... [TEXT_READ_FULL_REVIEW]

I came, I saw, I conquered! 12 nicely detailed B&W castles. More than mere castles really - they are part of an empire that will soon be part of MY world. (World domination, got love it!) This set comes with some interesting bonus material too. Stuff not readily visible in the publisher's preview. Basically, all the tools you need to set up your own economy and system of laws for each town individually, or for the empire as a whole. Includes both random city encounters and specific building/area encounters. A large list of stores that sell everything from A-Z (Even custom thrones.). Very nicely done. A lot more than I expected for token sum of $4.95 Much more than you get from other map sets that I have seen. Maps do have a somewhat dated look and therefore may not be for everyone. But they look detailed enough for me and should be easy to use which is what I like to see in a map set. I like to be able to see where chests, chairs and beds are in any give room. I like to see locks on do ... [TEXT_READ_FULL_REVIEW]

Outstanding maps. Some of the best dungeon maps I have ever seen. See publisher's preview to judge for yourself. I know where my players are spending this Halloween. The Temple of Blood awaits!

Wow! One of the largest selections of interesting dungeons that I have ever seen! The most detailed B&W maps of their kind. These maps are not for everyone. Only an experience Dungeon Mistress can do this map set justice. ;) My players are going to quiver and shake at some of the monsters these map sets conjurer up. I should note, these are not high definition maps, and in fact they are kind of rough, but rough in a good way. Do look at Publisher's Preview to see for yourself. Don't buy them if you don't like what you see in the preview, what you see is what you get. Personally, I like my maps rough ;) It makes them easier to edit if I so choose. (Map Sets should be about the Dungeon Mistress, and what she wants don't you think?)
As the Designer's note explains, these maps were designed to be easy to print, easy to read, and to be packed full of useful details. The publisher delivers with this collection. More than just maps, these are almost complete dungeons. Just add monsters a ... [TEXT_READ_FULL_REVIEW]

Great Maps! I bought some SSD map sets when they were sold as hardcopy. This set is their first and oldest set. So it is not as detailed as most of the newer ones. It has been out of print a long time and I don't have it, so I am happy to pick it up in eBook format. I am building my campaign world in Voldaria, and using mostly SSD maps. SSD makes like 7 or 8 major map sets that I know about. Voldaria is perhaps the most extensively mapped campaign world ever. Certainly the best I have seen mapped to this level of detail with standardized map keys. They may look simple, but a lot of work went into these sets and they are very useful once you understand the map key. Do look at the publisher's preview to see what I am talking about. Also check out SSD other map sets to see what I mean about even greater detail. If you normally use color maps with high resolution showing you floor texture and boxes/rectangles for doors then you may not like these. They tend to show a lot more detail then t ... I got these after seeing the publishers preview. They are exactly as described. These maps are just what I need to generate dungeons on the fly. They are not pretty, but they seem very functional. 20 different Caves & Caverns. A very detailed map key which instantly tells me how doors locked, where traps are located, and what monsters may be in the area. I like the white space for making my own notes. I will print one map for my players, and one for myself. For the price, these can't be beat. But they are probably not for everyone. Still, I give them my highest rating. ... [TEXT_READ_FULL_REVIEW]

The graphics are of very low quality and are useless on a screen and as a printout.

I just thought I might chime in here. I am an old school gamer. I have been playing D&D, GURPS, RoleMaster, and WarHammer since the mid 80s.
I got these maps. I printed them out. They look sharp. The most detailed I have ever seen at this scale. Whole cities illustrated as if architect drew them. This set, as the name suggests is focused on "heavily" fortified castles.
I have some high level players in my game world who think they can walk/fly over anything in their way. (Some ride dragons.) They are in for a big surprise! Some of these maps, especially the vault, are laid out to be serious death traps for foolish adventurers and would be thieves. Finally my players might have to think their way past a problem. These maps will save me hours of work. I would strongly recommend them to anyone who likes detail and who has treasure and/or kingdoms in their worlds that they want to defend from all monsters and/or adventurers.

12 Fortresses and Strongholds Map Set is a 22 page pdf product featuring more than a dozen maps suitable for any fantasy campaign setting. This product is one of several map sets presented by The Stainless Steel Dragon, although one of the first to appear in pdf form. This map set contains 16 maps of 12 different fortresses and strongholds, detailed with all manner of things within each map and each one also easily printable on a single page.
The product comes as a single pdf file that doesn't contain any bookmarks, nor a table of contents. The product includes useful front and back covers, although like the rest of the product the look and feel is quite dated. The very first page contains a rather stern copyright warning, and, if you're like me, you'll probably not appreciate being shouted out in bold letters with multiple exclamation marks. Given the fact that the second page contains an advertisement to buy their other products, I was not sure this pdf was off to the greatest sta ... [TEXT_READ_FULL_REVIEW]
