The Swordmage (13th Age Compatible, from Dark Pacts & Ancient Secrets)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

This free excerpt contains the 13th Age Compatible Swordmage class.

Swing a sword with one hand, fling spells with the other. The Swordmage is a dedicated defender, combining a high armor class with a sigil power that punishes enemies for ignoring you and attacking your squishier allies. Your spells add fire and lightning to your melee attacks, or block incoming strikes. As a frontline fighter, you are not quite as tough as the fighter or the paladin, but you’ll have many tricks up your sleeve that more than make up for it.

This is the entire class entry, with all 11 talents, 4 sigils and 34 spells. Get the full book Dark Pacts & Ancient Secrets for 5 additional classes: the Abomination, Fateweaver, Psion, Savage and Warlock, plus custom magic items for every class and talents to leverage the material in each core class. Dark Pacts is also available in print.

There's some confusion in my group about the Access to Wizardry feature. The way it is worded, it is unclear whether you can replace any number of your Swordmage spells with Wizard spells that are 2 levels lower, or if you may only do so for one spell.

The Adventurer tier feat from the Academy Training talent says one may swap one spell with the Access to Wizardry feature without the 2-level penalty, but does that replace (Feat is essentially a buff to AtW, making it so the one spell you get can be level-appropriate) or add onto (Feat makes it so you can take one level-appropriate spell and one/any number of spells with the 2-level penalty) the talent? My group disagree on whether or not the feat implies the more liberal interpretation of the class feature.

Doubt…..why some spells don't have the "upper level" version? Example: "Ghost Strike" (on page 92). There is only the 3rd level version of the spell. How can I memorize it when my PG arrives at level 7 and it can only use spell-slots of levels 5 and 7?

Basically, the 5th, 7th and 9th level versions are “no changes to 3rd level” and that’s just using up page space so it’s omitted.
The spell is good enough at higher levels that it doesn’t need any further buffs.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
