The Salt Cyclopedia of Comparative Mythology

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Your average book on mythology will tell about, say, Hades, and in the course of it mention that he was a death divinity. If you want to learn about death divinities in general, then you've still got a lot of work ahead of you.

This book approaches things from the opposite direction, which should be useful for worldbuilders. Rather than tell you about individual gods, this book explains how death divinities have worked across the world and then gives Hades and some other gods as examples.

With The Salt Cyclopedia at your side, you have all the tools that you need to start building a pantheon that is fresh and full of new life at the same time that it feels real, as though it's an authentic mythological system that just hadn't been uncovered until now. It includes not only basic mythemes but also discussions on divine epithets, fusing multiple gods together, building non-standard portfolios, and more.

I received a copy of this book from the author as part of a Kickstarter so I can't leave a review here. I found the book to be a treasure trove of information as I crafted the mythology of my world. I don't think I could read it straight through, and as Simon said, links would be helpful. What I did to help myself was create an offline index (though I only completed half of it) to let me look at related topics, such as creation myths or death ceremonies. The examples from real world mythologies added depth to my own creations. I do recommend this strongly if you are creating mythologies or religions.

Interesting, but rendered not very useful because the many cross-references in the PDF are not linked. Or is my copy not workign?

No, the cross-references just aren't linked. It's something that I plan to fix in the next edition. I'm currently working on that, but I'm also a graduate student, so I don't anticipate being able to release the third edition until next year.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
