ADD TO WISHLIST >

This action-packed adventure module is especially designed to give beginning Dungeon Masters and players help in learning the AD&D game system.

But don't be fooled by the title! The adventure is far from easy - in fact, it has challenges that can bring the careless character's adventuring career to an abrupt halt!

Filled with surprises and excitement, the adventure is still easy to referee - and during the game, players and the DM alike will pick up tips and information that will prove useful for many games to come.

Product History

WG10: "Child's Play" (1989), by Jean Rabe and Skip Williams, is the tenth-ish World of Greyhawk adventure. It was published in August 1989.

Origins (I): Onwards with Greyhawk. Greyhawk publication continued heavily throughout 1989. Though WG10: "Child's Play" (1989) appeared five months after WG9: "Gargoyle" (1989), it was published just one month after The City of Greyhawk.

So where do you find a supply of Greyhawk adventures after years of neglect? The answer was the RPGA.

Origins (II): Back to the RPGA. The previous Greyhawk adventure, "Gargoyle", started life with the RPGA way back in 1986, but WG10: "Child's Play" was of much more recent pedigree, appearing as "Scrap of Paper" — first at the AD&D Grand Masters tournament for Gen Con 21 (1988), then as a network event at other conventions in 1989.

Adventure Tropes. Like the other Greyhawk adventures at the time, "Child's Play" was advertised as an introductory adventure. It's a somewhat odd choice, because "Child's Play" is quite high powered, running levels 13-15. Some of the pregenerated characters are multiclass and others are high-level spellcasters, making them quite intimidating for newcomers to play. On the other hand, the light-hearted adventuring might be more appealing to new players, and particularly young players. Much of it centers on hunting (or saving) animals and dealing with treasonous grandchildren.

Genre Tropes: Silliness. "Child's Play" continues another trend begun in "Gargoyle": it's quite silly. It's hard to call any of it parody or satire: it's just over the top silliness. There's Yeenoghu hunting rabbits, lamia selling rabbits, and giant monsters ("Warning! Very deadly absurdly big monster!") eating each other. There's even a valley-girl gold dragon and a vampire named Luigi.

This silliness was probably a result of the adventure's origins in the RPGA, who was producing lighter adventures than TSR was at the time.

Exploring Greyhawk. "Child's Play" is set in "the monarchy of Rhesdain" which is "on the edge of the Yetil Mountains". Presumably this means the Yatil Mountains, but you won't find Rhesdain referenced in any other Greyhawk source. Fans suggest that Rhesdain could be either a canton of Perrenland or else another kingdom adjacent to Perrenland.

But don't expect much actual Greyhawk lore.

NPCs of Note. The demon lord Yeenoghu makes a rare appearance here, following up on an equally unimportant appearance in H4: "Throne of Bloodstone" (1988). According to this adventure, he tracks down rangers who have dared to kill too more gnolls.

About the Creators. At the time of "Child's Play", Jean Rabe was the Network Coordinator of the RPGA and Skip Williams was a regular contributor. Their names were also appearing in the RPGA's own "LC" adventurs (1989-1991).

We (Wizards) recognize that some of the legacy content available on this website does not reflect the values of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise today. Some older content may reflect ethnic, racial, and gender prejudice that were commonplace in American society at that time. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. This content is presented as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. Dungeons & Dragons teaches that diversity is a strength, and we strive to make our D&D products as welcoming and inclusive as possible. This part of our work will never end.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
