Referee's Aid 4: A Guide to Star Systems

AJOUTER A LA LISTE DE SOUHAITS >

A star system consists of one or more stars plus whatever planets, comets and asteroids orbit it. Composition can vary a lot but for every star system there is a designated mainworld. This is almost always the most populous planet in the system, and will have this status for some good reason. Usually this means good habitability or resources, though there are sometimes other reasons why a world is settled. Where there is no obvious mainworld, one is usually selected based upon its relative position to the system’s primary (star). This might be an airless rockball in some systems, and another world could in theory be designated mainworld if the system is later settled and a different planet is chosen as the main location.

Written by fan-favourite M J Dougherty, A Guide to Star Systems is an invaluable addition to the Referee's Aid series, exploring the different systems of the galaxy and discovering how they can be used to influence campaigns.

So what exactly does this book contain? New tables for generating the rest of the the system, or purely suggestions of what else might be out there?

The book contains what I call "narrative" discussion of what is in a star system rather than science-based tables on how to generate the details of worlds and moons in a system.
Example: a very thin atmosphere is like being on top of Everest (0.3 atm pressure) - you won't die instantly, but you will get light headed in a few hours and need medical assistance.

Well, all of that is true, but I can work that out for myself being a science nerd (as most Traveller referees are in my experience). So if a prospective Traveller referee is weak at science then they may find this useful, but for me it was the least useful book I have bought from Mongoose.

Bit harsh to give it a 1 star review just because you personally didn't find it useful, isn't it? There are a lot of Traveller GMs who aren't "science nerds" (particularly when it comes to astronomy and planetary science) who would probably find that sort of qualitative discussion very useful.

As it is, I'd like to judge it for myself but the full-size preview isn't working...

Thanks Simon. Yes, Trav Ref's with H.S. level science knowledge would not find that very useful.

Now that you have bought it, you can give it your own rating to give a broader range of views. The whole point of a review is to show what I liked (or not) about a product rather than try and guess what others might (or might not) like about it. Because I have had such a good experience of previous books by Martin Dougherty I bought it despite the full-size preview not working, only to feel very disappointed.
